MAYBE IT’S TIME

From the film A Star is Born

When thinking of the soundtrack for 2018’s A Star Is Born most people will immediately start to hum Shallow. And why wouldn’t they. For a time it was a musical behemoth. It remains one of the highest selling singles of all time, and is the 25th most streamed song in Spotify history.

But for me, the standout song of A Star is Born will always be Maybe It’s Time.

In less than two minutes it beautifully sets the tone for the film, it’s themes, and, ultimately, it’s destination, as we see Jackson trying, and failing, to move forward, let go of the old, and make way for the new.

Whether that is in his relationship with Ally, his dependance on alcohol, or his distaste when Ally moves closer to pop music, Jackson clearly, deep down, wants to do better, but cannot let the old ways die, and all of this is foreshadowed in Maybe It’s Time.

Maybe It’s Time could also reflect on us, the audience, and Hollywood itself. Bradley Cooper’s iteration of A Star Is Born is the fourth in the series, following versions made in 1937, 1954 and 1976. All four movies attempt to put their own spin on things, in order to reflect the time in which it was made, but the fact that they can do this, and be successful in it, while still sharing the same thematic essence, and spanning almost 100 years, shows that we cannot let the past be the past. Despite how much we strive to change, despite how much we want to let the old ways die, the cycle will continue.
