DAY MAKING GIRL

From the film How To Build A Girl

How To Build A Girl is a film that should have had a larger audience. Unfortunately for it the COVID-19 pandemic stopped it’s planned cinema release, sending it straight to streaming, and getting lost amongst the myriad of options on offer at that time.

While Beanie Feldstein and Alfie Allen may be semi-household names, they lack the star appeal that may have otherwise brought it into the mainstream.

Which is a shame, because How To Build A Girl is a fun, often touching, story of a young girl - Johanna - trying to forge her way into the male dominated world of 90’s film criticism, forcing her to sacrifice her natural voice, for one with more of an edge.

Alfie Allens John Kite acts as a reminder throughout to Johanna’s original approach. Johanna’s first interview, and someone who becomes instantly enamoured by her unique approach to questioning, and to her excited, infectious, personality.

Day Making Girl is the first of Johns songs that we hear, and is one that returns throughout the film. As Johanna’s star rises Day Making Girl offers the audience, and herself, reminders of where she came from, who she used to be, and who, deep down, maybe she still is.
